Madras High Court orders interim stay on using the word 'Mersal' in Vijay starrer
The Madras High Court today restrained the producers of an upcoming Tamil movie starring Vijay from using the word 'Mersal' in its title.
Chennai
Justice Anitha Sumanth granted the interim injunction when a civil suit came up and posted the matter for hearing after the Dusshera holidays.
The civil suit was filed by A Rajendran of 'Film Factori'. According to Rajendran, he had selected a story and titled it 'Mersalaitan'. He had registered the story with the Tamil Nadu Film Writers' Association.
When he came to know that the title had already been registered in the name of Green Apple Pictures, by its proprietor Mohammed Sadiq, he approached him and obtained a no objection certificate to transfer the title in his name.
Following this, the title 'Mersalaitan' and 'Naan Mersalaitan' had been registered in his name, he submitted.
The title was also registered with the Tamil Nadu Tamil Film Producers Council in 2014, which was confirmed by the Council by its letter dated May 19, 2015.
He said he commenced production of 'Mersalaitan' in August last year, but was shocked to note that there was another film titled 'Mersal' and that advertising material was released on June 20 last.
He lodged complaints with the Council and as there was no proper response, he filed the present suit.
Granting interim injunction, the judge restrained the upcoming movie's producers, Thendral Studios Limited and Sri Thenandal Films, from using the word 'Mersal'.
The movie is likely to be released on October 12.
‘Confident of getting the title back’
“We are awaiting the hearing on October 3. We are confident of getting the title Mersal back. Further announcement on this will be made after the court hearing,” said a source from the production unit of Thenandal Studio Limited, responding to the Madras High Court’s interim stay on Friday on the title Mersal, actor Vijay’s much awaited movie.
Meanwhile, the movie’s teaser created waves on the internet within hours of its release and has clocked more than 12 million views and has earned over 7 lakh likes.
This makes Mersal’s teaser one of the most-liked teasers on social media. Made on a budget of Rs 120 crore, the film is all set to hit theatres on Deepavali this year.
Mersal has surpassed Ajith’s Vivegam to become the most liked teaser on YouTube.
