An official from the department said that they have been receiving regular complaints about the food stalls on their WhatsApp complaint number 9444042322.
“We were getting repeated complaints that the food sold at these stalls is unhygienic and sell foods that has crossed its expiry date.” He added, “We inspected some of the stores three weeks ago and asked the food stall owners to follow the food safety instructions. But when the complaints continued unabated, we conducted a raid on Friday morning to see that none of the shop owners were following the rules.”
The team — comprising 10 food safety officers (FSO) led by the designated officer — inspected 37 stalls and found that 32 were flouting food safety norms.
They also seized 800 kg of unwholesome food such as parotta, biryani with artificial synthetic colour and coloured sweets. Other such as rose milk with colour mixed (30 litres), reused oil (60 litres) and 25 soiled water cans were also seized while 500 water sachets that lacked proper labelling or were past the expiry date, were confiscated. The seized items were destroyed on Friday. Following the raid, three civil cases will be filed with the adjudicating officer and the district revenue officer (DRO).
