The man, however, refused to pay up the entire amount and gave his kidnappers only Rs 3 lakh after being helped by his friend. He was then released, said the police.

Bakri Muhammed (63) is a resident of Nethajinagar in Tondaiyarpet and runs a paper plate manufacturing company there. When Muhammed was on his way to a mosque on Wednesday afternoon, a car stopped close to him and a man sprayed a chemical on his face before pulling him into the vehicle and fleeing the spot. When Muhammed regained consciousness, the kidnappers gagged and threatened him, and took him to Katpadi in Vellore district.

Later, they demanded a ransom of 80 lakh. Muhammed, however, claimed that he did not have the money and pleaded with them to reduce the amount. The kidnappers eventually reduced the ransom to Rs 30 lakh, but Muhammed claimed that he did not have even that amount.

The captors then reduced the ransom to Rs 3 lakh for which Muhammed said that he needed to contact his friend. They let him call the friend who brought the money and handed it over to one of the kidnappers in Vysarpasdi near Law College. They released Muhammed after some time.

He then approached the Katpadi police who directed him to file a case in Chennai. So, Muhammed lodged a complaint in RK Nagar police station on Thursday night. “We have formed a special team to nab the culprits. We have got a tip off and will arrest the accused in a day or two,” said inspector I Jayaraj.
