Two routes originating from Chennai have emerged as proud potentials in the race for the world’s first hyperloop corridors.

If the projects become a reality, commuting from Chennai to Bengaluru, and to Mumbai would take only about 20 minutes and 50 minutes respectively.

India’s dreams of travelling in the hyper-speed corridor got a shot in the arm on Thursday as two teams from the country joined the list of 10 winners of the prestigious Hyperloop One Global Challenge. BengaluruChennai (Team: AECOM India) and Mumbai-Chennai (Team: Hyperloop India) were among the routes that made the final cut. Following a close assessment of the proposals by a panel of experts in infrastructure, technology and transportation, 10 teams from five countries were chosen from among hundreds of applicants.

Hyperloop One, the only company in the world that has built a full-scale Hyperloop system, announced the winners of its challenge to identify the strongest new Hyperloop routes globally. The company will commit meaningful business and engineering resources and work closely with each of the winning teams/routes to determine their commercial viability. Earlier last week, Andhra Pradesh expressed its aim to become India’s first user of the Hyperloop.

The Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with US-based Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT). Connecting Vijayawada and Amaravati, the Hyperloop could reduce commute time from over 60 minutes to around 6 minutes.
