The three km and five km run were organised by the Indian Academy of Neurology and the Association of Indian Neurologists of America (AINA), to spread awareness and promote fitness among the Neurologists, Medical Community and the general public.
“Daily, a city like Chennai is said to be witnessing about 18 cases of stroke. In Tamil Nadu, the estimated number was 286 per day. It is, therefore, important and critical for everyone, including the Government, to take corrective measures before the disease becomes endemic,” said Dr U Meenakshisundaram, Secretary, IANCON.
While stressing on the fact that exercise induces the brain on multiple fronts, he said, “It increases the heart rate, which pumps more oxygen to the brain. It also aids the bodily release of a plethora of hormones, all of which participate in aiding and providing a nourishing environment for the growth of brain cells.” Therefore, the “run for the brain” was held at Besant Nagar Beach to create awareness about Brain Health and preventive measures along with the importance of time factor, he added.
