Signature drive marks World Sexual Health Day

WAS Media Committee vice chairman and member, governing committee, WAS Dr KS Jeyarani Kamaraj and Member, Sexual Rights Committee, WAS, Chairman of the Indian Association for Sexology Dr T Kamaraj, students and educationists participated in the human chain held at the Madras University campus near Marina beach front.

They said the theme of the World Sexual Health Day this year was “Love, Bonding and Intimacy a Possibility for All’’.

The celebrations which began on September 4 will go on till September 11. They said this year the day was celebrated in a big way by the Indian Association for Sexology, a unit of World Association for Sexology, in association with the Departments of Anthropology, Psychology and Women Studies of University of Madras.

Dr Jeyarani Kamaraj said every year September 4 was celebrated as the World Sexual Health Day across the globe by the WAS to remove wrong notions about Sexology and to create an awareness among the people on this aspect.

A symposium on this year’s theme was also held at the University of Madras. Inaugurating the symposium, Madras University Vice-Chancellor P Duraisamy called for more awareness on sexual education.

Stating that incidents of HIV have come down significantly, he said, conducting symposiums like this would create good thoughts among the people, besides creating more awareness on sexual education.

Madras High Court advocate Arulmozhi, in his address, said the number of divorce cases in the court has been on the increase, with the reasons differing every five years for the separation.

Dr T Kamaraj said ensuring sexual rights for all was the main aim, as 64 per cent of girls and 55 per cent of boys were subjected to sexual abuse. Dr Jeyarani spoke on this year’s theme of WAS and said since both the husband and the wife were employed, differences crop up between them leading to the divorce.
