The incident took place when the victim Chandrasekar had gone to Thanjavur along with his wife to attend a wedding. When Chandrasekar’s son Rajesh reached the house at Krishna Nagar on Tuesday morning, he found the house broken open and valuables strewn on the floor. He also found a locker missing.

Based on his alert, Maduravoyal police rushed to the house and collected evidences such as finger prints. The locker contained jewels weighing over 100 sovereigns, though police maintained that it had only property documents. Chandrasekar, who was alerted about the incident, returned to Chennai.

In another incident, an elderly woman was relieved of her three-sovereign gold chain by a bike-borne duo in Virugambakkam on Monday. The incident took place around 5 pm on Arockiya Street, when the victim, Sulochana (60), a housemaid from Thangal Erikarai street, was waiting outside a house. An unidentified man, who was passing by, snatched her chain and got onto a bike which was kept ready and fled the spot. Based on her complaint, Virugambakkam police have registered a case.

Meanwhile, K K Nagar police arrested a man, who was involved in two chain-snatching incidents in the locality and seized 16 sovereigns from him. The accused have been identified as D Sathish (29) of MGR Nagar. CCTV footage helped police to nab the accused, said an official. Though the face wasn’t clear in the footage, the person went to the same spot. When police enquired people in the locality showing the footage, he was identified as Sathish of Vellore and living in MGR Nagar. While he snatched 10 sovereign chain from a woman in CBI quarters on August 25, the next day he targeted a woman sitting in a park in Bharathidasan Colony and seized her two chains weighing three sovereigns each.
