The Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) is gearing up to supply treated sewage water for industrial purposes.
Officials said that an expert committee had already checked the project and 45 million litres of water would be supplied daily to industries located in Sriperumbudur and Manali. Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) would exclusively be set up in Koyambedu and Kodungaiyur, they added.
Sources said that considering that government industries like State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (SIPCOT) need water to run the industries, even at a time when water scarcity is prevailing, the industries have already approached Metro water board to provide treated sewage water.
Subsequently, an expert committee from Union urban development ministry recently visited two plants and suggested that new plants be set up.“A few years ago, we supplied treated water to industries but we had to discontinue it. Since the industries approached us again, we will establish two separate plants at a cost of Rs 300 crore,” a senior engineer said. A CMWSSB official said, “We will follow the guidelines set by the committee to set up the plants.”
