Wife burns self, man dies during rescue attempt

Police said that the couple Karunakaran (36) and Devaki (35) was residing in VOC Street of Lakshmipuram in Puzhal and that Karunakaran was working as an electrician. 

A few months ago, Karunakaran pledged his wife’s jewels and this led to frequent altercations between them. Devaki demanded money from him to redeem the jewels as he was wasting money on liquor. Police said that, when Karunakaran reached home on Wednesday night, Devaki questioned him about her jewels which led to an argument again. All of a sudden, Devaki set herself on fire. Karunakaran tried to save her by dousing the fire and in the incident, both suffered burn injuries. 

Neighbours heard their cries and rushed them to the Kilpauk government medical hospital. Both died on Thursday morning without responding to treatment.
