Officials, who are upbeat about the increasing storage in the reservoirs, said that the total capacity is expected to increase by 750 million cubic feet in a week. They claim that the existing storage in these reservoirs would ease the problem in the water supply.

According to Public Works Department (WRD) officials, Chembarambakkam, Chozhavaram and Red Hills lakes have been receiving considerable inflow.

“The Chembarambakkam lake is receiving 160 cusecs of inflow, while Red Hills is getting 52 cusecs. Around 35 cusecs is flowing into the Cholavaram lake,” officials said.

“Going by the present scenario, the total storage in four reservoirs, including Poondi reservoir, is 250 million cubic feet and with rain continuing, we are confident that the level will go up to 750 million cubic feet in a week,” said Mani, Superintending Engineer, Palar Basin Circle, Chennai region.

The SE added that since Poondi reservoir had low storage, this was the right time to carry out repair works.
