“I faced a lot of difficulties after the stretch was made one way. It took at least 20 minutes to reach Ega theatre junction after taking Gengu Reddy subway. Secondly, vehicles would always be seen piling up over the Gurusamy bridge,” said A Vijay Ganesan, a techie of Iyyappanthangal.

The double way on the PH road will reduce the travel time, he added.

According to State Highway (SH) officials, the stretch was made one way after Metro rail works which were in full swing and it forced motorists to deviate from the PH road near Gengu Reddy subway and they needed to take left side to reach the Ega theatre junction through Harrington Road. Still worse, the diversion vehicle traffic in Gurusamy over bridge in Chetpet, took a lot time to cross for the motorists. However, vehicles were allowed directly in the stretch between 11 pm and 6 am. Police officials had earlier said that Poonamallee High road, the stretch of EVR Salai between Gengu Reddy subway and Ega junction, which was made one way in 2011, will revert to two-way traffic from August 6 in view of completion of Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) work.

A spokesperson of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said, “We completed our works and also re-laid the road, which was bumpy due to works and we have handed over the stretch to the officials concerned.” Earlier, City Commissioner of Police AK Viswanathan oversaw the traffic and held discussion with other police officials to reduce the traffic congestion during peak hours.
