Visually challenged to get voice alert at Chennai traffic signals
In an initiative that would make city roads more visually-challenged-friendly, the Chennai traffic police along with the Social Welfare Department has installed a voice alert system at traffic signals to guide them while crossing the roads.

Under the new facility, a recorded voice will alert about the status of the signal, so that the visually-challenged people could cross the road accordingly.
The voice will announce the colour of the signal, every time it changes and police officials said the alert would be audible even among other noises on the road. The system will be implemented at 150 traffic signals across the city.
“So far, it has been installed in 30 signals, including War Memorial Road, Kamarajar Salai and near Vivekananda Statue,” according to Joint Commissioner Prem Anand Sinha. “Work on installing in the remaining 120 places will be completed in the next 20 days,” he added.
The Department of Welfare of Visually Challenged mooted this idea and also made an allocation of Rs 75 lakh for it.
