CoP leads clean-up drive at Porur lake

After cleaning the two-kilometre long bunds of the Porur Lake, similar such clean-up drives will be conducted at the other four major lakes in and around the Chennai city, the Commissioner said. 

HM Jayaram, Additional Commissioner (North), K Periaiah, Additional Commissioner (Traffic), N Baskaran, Joint Commissioner (North), Assistant Commissioner (Ambattur) and volunteers from Rotary Club, Isha and college students cleared the garbage dumped around the lake. The collected garbage was later transported in trucks to dumpyards. 

Chembarambakkam, Poondi and Puzhal are the three other major lakes that cater to the water needs of Chennai. However, when all three went dry during the past summer, CMWSSB turned to Porur Lake from which, nearly 40 lakh litre water was drawn every day. A permanent purification plant too was set up at a cost of Rs 1.85 crore in an area of 1,080 sqft adjacent to the lake. The plant was inaugurated by Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani. 

City Police under Commissioner AK Viswanathan has been regularly involved in activities to engage with public to create awareness, be it about road safety or enrolling dropouts back in schools. 

The lake clean-up drive is the new initiative they have taken up in association with Rotary Club.
