Class 10 girl jumps from school building, hospitalised

The girl, Farhana, 15, (name changed) suffered injuries to her spinal cord and neck and has been admitted at Sri Ramachandra Medical College Hospital. 

Police said that the school administration of Our Lady Matriculation School in Maduravoyal had come to know of the teenager’s alleged relationship with a fellow student and on Thursday afternoon had warned her in front of her parents, to end the relationship. 

“Unable to get over the humiliation, Farhana jumped from the second floor of the school building even as her parents were talking to the school principal,” police said. 

The student was immediately rushed to the SRMC Hospital in Porur where she continues to remain in a critical condition. The Maduravoyal police have registered a case and are investigating. 

During investigation, school administration has allegedly told the police that the girl had cut her hair short over which she had a quarrel with her parents. “School management had claimed that girl had attempted suicide due to the quarrel with her parents,” police said. While Farhana’s father Shibu is a real estate businessman, her mother is a homemaker. Attempts made by this newspaper to reach the school management was futile. Further investigations are on. 

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, another Class 11 student committed suicide by hanging at his house in Noombal. The deceased, Harish Raghavendra (16), was studying at Government Higher Secondary School in Porur and police said the boy had been depressed for over a week and could have taken the extreme step for that reason.
