The hostel, which was opened at a cost Rs 28.85 crore, has 178 rooms and will house 534 students. A step up from the old hostel, it will have facilities like two lifts, a modern kitchen, a gym, an auditorium, a reverse osmosis water purifier and a solar heater, said the Dean Dr Narayana Babu.

“By Monday, we will allot the students their rooms, after which they will move out of the old hostel, which is going to be made into a PG Hostel post renovation,” he added.

During the inauguration, the Chief Minister said, “We have allotted Rs 1,573.23 crore for better medical infrastructure and Rs 401.97 crore for medical equipment. Nearly, 5,768 new jobs were being created in hospitals. Over 250 MBBS students and 450 Dental students are joining every year.

Therefore, the need for ensuring better facilities and provision for them to stay was essential.” The building covers an area of 1.28 lakh square feet. Students were unhappy in the old hostel owing to lack of space.

“We felt claustrophobic in the old hostel as the number of students joining each year kept increasing. Though we had adequate facilities there like an RO water purifier and washing machines, the lack of space for accommodation made it very difficult for us.

We are now overjoyed and cannot wait to move into the new hostel,” said an MBBS student at the college, adding “We are expecting to be allotted rooms within the coming week and shift soon after.”
