No Alandur transit, now it’s direct trip to airport

Air travellers taking a metro rail from Koyambedu and Nehru Park may no long have to break journey at Alandur metro rail station and take another train to reach the city airport. CMRL (Chennai metro rail limited) has resumed direct metro rail connectivity to Airport from Koyambedu and Nehru Park side.

Originally launched in November 2016 using loop line facility, which allows trains from Koyambedu to switch corridors at Alandur station and run towards Airport, the service was suspended shortly thereafter owing to operational difficulties.

CMRL had resumed direct airport service again by putting loop line facility to use a fortnight ago. However, there is a catch. Not all metro trains from Nehru Park underground station or Koyambedu station would go directly to Airport.

CMRL has scattered the services. “A few trains would go directly to the Airport and a few to St Thomas Mount. The new arrangement would also allow travellers to alight at Alandur and take a train to Little Mount,” said a CMRL officer, confirming the launch of the direct airport service.

Resumption of direct metro service would be a big boon to air travellers given that they do not have to wait an additional five or ten minutes at Alandur station for the connecting train besides ‘dragging’ their baggage from second to first tier to board the metro train.

Air travellers would also be able to reach Airport from Nehru Park in 40 minutes, the maximum time required to cover the distance as per the existing time table.
