Tambaram GH to get trauma care centre

Located between Chennai and Villupuram, many accident cases are reported in this area. But, the 150-beded hospital struggles to accommodate the patients. On a regular basis, around 1500 out-patients visit the hospital. 

Since the hospital only has a stabilisation centre, most of the cases are sent to Government Royapettah Hospital, the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) and Chengalpattu Government Hospital, both far from the area. 

In the situation, the Health Minister C Vijayabaskar, had announced that the hospital would get a Trauma Care Centre soon. “The centre will be built at a cost of Rs 10 crore, while a Cardiac Care Unit will also be built at a cost of Rs 50 lakh in the hospital. 

Funds for the same have been allocated,” the Health Minister had said. Stating that Rs 5.2 lakh of the allotted amount will be spent on high-end equipment, he added that Rs 2.72 crore would be spent on a CT scan machine and Rs 50 lakh on other equipment. 

“Two buildings for this purpose are under construction at a cost of Rs 4.18 crore,” he added. “We see at least three accident cases every day. Being the only Government Hospital on the city’s outskirts, we tend to get cases from GST Road, the Chennai bypass, Rajiv Gandhi Salai and from the East Coast Road. However, serious cases are referred to other Government Hospitals in Royapettah or Chengalpattu,” said a source from the hospital. 

Stating that the trauma care centre will cater to many accident victims from the area, Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said that there have been recent cases of accidents in places like Mahabalipuram as well, and the victims were referred to Royapettah hospital as due to unavailability of the facilities.
