A special team has also been formed to nab three other members of the gang. Police said the gang from Rajasthan had broken in to the shop owned by K Heeraram (40), a resident of Guza Sahib Street in Mannadi on June 6 and decamped with Rs 4.46 lakh.

Cops tracked the mobile number of the prime accused, identified as BS Vikram Sigh (27) and arrested him along with his associate J Raju Singh (27). Police said Vikram Singh was a former employee at the shop of Heeraram and left the job five years ago. Vikram Singh, who had full knowledge of the daily collection of the shop and where the cash would be kept, decided to rob the shop.

Subsequently, he made a plan with the help of his friends Raju Singh, Pirak Ram, Bora Ram and Jittu for the robbery. The gang then came to Chennai and executed the plan on the midnight of June 6.

Heeraram came to know about the burglary on June 7 morning and lodged a complaint with the Esplanade police.

The shop employees and owners of nearby establishments had told the police that Vikram Singh had visited the location several times a few days ahead of the robbery.

Acting on this lead, police picked him up in Bangalore. During interrogations, he confessed to the crime. Police then picked up Raju Singh.
