Peer Mohammed, the proprietor of Parveen Traders, the private entity that demolished the building, speaking to DTNext, said, “The demolition was completed by 4 pm on June 20. The debris will be removed in a week.”

The fire, which started in the wee hours of May 31 at Chennai Silk in T Nagar, took nearly 30 hours for around 400 fire fighters to douse it. Luckily, there were no casualties. The demolition process faced many hiccups, due to lack of coordination between agencies involved.

Parveen Traders were roped in by the Public Works Department (PWD), who was the liaising agency. The lack of safety features resulted in the death of a worker on June 11, when the ground collapsed and disturbed the ramp, which tipped the jaw cutter machine. The machine fell on the worker, crushing him to death.

The building of the leading textile showroom was found to have flouted several norms and the lack of fire safety equipment. Now, the end of the demolition process brings relief to the residents, who have been suffering due to their normal rhythm of life being disturbed by the works.
