Regreening initiative begins to compensate Vardah damage
The Greater Chennai Corporation has begun the regreening initiative in some parts of the city as the officials at zonal level are teaming up with residents to replace trees that had fallen during December 2016 Cyclone Vardah.
Chennai
Two months ago, the civic body held a meeting with botanical experts and officials from the Forest Department, to decide on a plan for the regreening initiative, after the city lost close to 20,000 trees during Cyclone Vardah.
A senior Corporation official said, “Work has started in certain zones, where the regreening initiative is being carried out, with an eye on technical details. However, the massive replantation effort has started in phases.”
Another official said that in the southern region of the city, regreening initiatives were happening until the onset of summer.
“We teamed up with the resident welfare associations, NGOs and local companies and planted 1,500 trees along the streets. The Corporation would support the digging of trenches and provide technical support for them. The activity will resume once the Summer ends,” he said.
Arul Priya, a resident who manages the greening initiative of MRC Nagar Residents Welfare Association, said that initiatives are welcome. Recalling her recent experience, she said, “We tried to plant 50 trees near the composting pit but that effort was unsuccessful. We are hoping to bring in an expert and ensure greening that space. It would be great if the Corporation could help us.”
Corporation to take over Perambur abattoir
The Greater Chennai Corporation will take over the abattoir in Perambur, following a long legal tussle.
A Corporation official confirmed the information. “The Corporation will take over the facility. The contractor will get a compensation, which will be calculated and remitted. The phase two of the project will be soon taken up. A private contractor will be engaged to run the facility as per norms. The
contractor has been asked to come for a talks,” the official said. The Madras High Court had pulled up the civic body for the delay in setting up a modern abattoir in Perambur and set a deadline for opening the facility on January 22, 2015. Before the deadline, the Corporation official moved the Supreme Court to stay the decision of Madras High Court. The apex court recently directed the Corporation to take over the facility.
