CHENNAI: In yet another case of a spurned man stabbing a young woman who has turned down his romantic advances, a 24-year-old was attacked with a knife right inside her house on Sunday morning by her ‘friend’ for turning down his marriage proposal.

The accused had also allegedly cheated the girl’s family to the tune of Rs 18,60,000.

It all started eight months ago when the victim befriended 27-year-old Sabiyullah on Facebook. Police said she sold apparels through Facebook and Sabiyullah first became her customer and eventually a friend.

Over the next few months, the victim introduced Sabiyullah to her family and he visited their house regularly. When the woman told him that their family property near Vaniyambadi in Vellore district had been encroached upon, Sabiyullah promised her that he would resolve the matter and took Rs 10 lakh from her family. Sources said he received huge sums of money from the girl on different occasions.

Meanwhile, Sabiyullah also proposed the victim, which she allegedly refused. Since then, he began threatening her to marry him. As the girl began demanding her money back, Sabiyullah started making calls to her family members threatening to ruin their reputation unless they got her daughter married to him.

On Sunday, Sabiyullah called her around 3 am ahead of the beginning of fasting hours and got into an argument. Angered over her attitude, Sabiyullah came to her house around 9 am. He entered Fathima’s room, where she was asleep with her elder sister. He then attacked her with a knife causing injuries on her neck. The victim's sister who tried to stop him also suffered injuries. On hearing their cries, neighbours rushed to the sisters’ rescue and handed Sabiyullah over to the Royapettah police. Further investigation is on.
