After the recent accident, in which a woman was killed by speeding bike racers on the city road, police have begun a crackdown on such rash driving. In a single day of the drive recently, the city cops managed to collect Rs 2 lakh towards penalty and the drive will continue in the coming days also. Lack of strict enforcement of traffic rules has been pointed out as a major reason for the upswing in road accidents in the city during a meeting held in the city.

Top police officers decided to carry out special drives to curb over speeding and rash driving in a bid to bring down the number of accidents in the city.

“The drive is continuing and we are mainly focusing on over speeding and rash driving. We are conducting checks at usual speed points and are booking everyone, who oversteps the speed limits,” M T Ganeshamoorthy, joint commissioner of traffic, North, told DTNext. The traffic cops have also been instructed not to spare the MTC bus drivers, who often violate the rules. Sources said DTNext that police would seek action against those bus drivers, who routinely engages in rash driving and over speeding.

“We have engaged special squads at every important point and they have been asked to check motorists. There are several such squads being formed in all zones for the purpose,” K Bhavaneeswari, joint commissioner of traffic, South, said.

Enforcement of traffic rules had been a major problem for the Chennai city traffic police due to shortage of manpower.

The available traffic cops are deputed for traffic regulation and they do not get time to check on traffic violations, officials pointed out.
