Private buses save the day for MTC
Though the transport strike was called off on Tuesday evening, earlier in the day, the public suffered as a majority of the MTC services did not hit the roads. However, the situation was not as bad as it was on Tuesday as around 600 private buses were operated in the city on Tuesday.

The arrival of private buses came as a big relief to the commuters in several important areas across the city. However, since the buses were in different colours, passengers were not able to identify the routes on which they play. Passengers were also slightly apprehensive about the fare that would be charged in the new services. Though such buses had boards with route numbers, commuters were still confused as they were not instantly visible. Moreover, as all the drivers and conductors were new, they were unaware of the routes and fare But, the MTC staff present in most locations guided them.
Since a minimum number of buses were operated in the city, all of them were running to full capacity. Out of 3,500 MTC buses, only around 500 buses were seen plying in the city.
“Though I am aware that a strike is on across the state, I thought that local buses will be available. However, when I reached here, the CMBT premises wore a deserted look with only a few buses. However, I could not find out my route buses, after which I took an auto,” said A Pandiyan, who came from Ariyalur.
Meanwhile, the crew of MTC and private buses were operating with fear, as 12 MTC buses were stoned on Monday.
“It is a fact that we are taking the buses out, but we also fear untoward incidents,” a driver said.
Meanwhile, transport minister MR Vijayabaskar visited the Perambur depot and inspected the operation of government buses on Tuesday morning. Later, he briefed the media that the government would protect employees, who came for duty and there was no need to panic. He also reiterated that around 75 per cent of buses are operated. But some unions claim that only 10 per cent of buses are operated with temporary drivers and conductors.
Due to strike, security was beefed up in all the depots and main bus stops.
