Transgender overcomes struggle, clears Class 12

“Most of the transgenders shy away from going to a school or college and often dropout. I was lucky enough to have gotten support from my classmates and staff of my school, Kamarajar Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Ambattur,” says Tharika Banu, who enrolled for Class 12 there. They made me feel one among them and helped me prepare for the exams as I was forced to take a year break. Prior to this I was in Tuticorin,” says the 20-year old, adding that the journey was not an easy one.
Tharika had to miss one year of education, between 2014-2015 as she underwent a surgery. “I had to miss a few years of education as I was going through a personal crisis. My parents did not accept me the way I was and I had to run away from home. I eventually met like-minded people. I am thankful that I met Grace Banu, who I call ‘mother’ now. She is the first transgender in the State to get admission into an engineering college, through Anna University counselling,” adds Tharika.
When asked about future plans, Tharika, who wants to become a doctor, says the calls have been never-ending and praises are pouring-in from all corners. “My mother is my role model who made me realise the importance of education. I want to inspire people like me who are reluctant to break stereotypes and pursue higher education and play a crucial role in society,” adds a determined Tharika.
