According to police, the deceased, Nivedha (47), a resident of 3rd Street, Annamalai Nagar, Thozhavanpalayam, Coimbatore was a divorcee and a mother of two grown up children working in Coimbatore and Chennai respectively.

A government high school teacher in Pollachi, Nivedha was in a relationship with S Ilayaraja (29), who works with the Fire and Rescue Service department in Coimbatore, for the last six years.

Despite getting married about a year ago, Ilayaraja continued his relationship with Nivedha. Nivedha befriended Ganapathy (33), a resident of Kolathur, Chennai through Facebook, and recently gave him 50,000. Ganapathy is also married and has a child.

Nivedha and Ilayaraja came to Chennai on Monday afternoon, in a bid to trace Ganapathi and get back the money loaned to him.

When they reached Chennai, Nivedha called Ganapathy over phone and asked him to come to Anna Nagar- New Avadi Road junction.

“When Ganapathy reached the spot, Ilayaraja insisted that they go to his residence. Ganapathy first refused, but finally agreed to take Nivedha alone to his residence. This irked Ilayaraja so much that when Ganapathy tried to take Nivedha on his two-wheeler, Ilayaraja rammed his Maruti 800 against the bike,” K Chandra Sekharan, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Anna Nagar, told DTNext.

While Ganapathy escaped unhurt, Nivedha was caught between the two vehicles and sustained severe injuries, he added. Ilayaraja escaped from the spot. The public alerted the traffic police thinking that it was an accident. The traffic police rushed Nivedha to a hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. Ganapathy later told police about Ilayaraja’s role in the accident. The police, who initially registered an accident case, altered it to murder and arrested Ilayaraja on Tuesday. He has been remanded to custody.
