“The market which is setup in the expanse of 9,000 sq ft hosts as many as 19 wholesalers and about 200 retail fish vendors who had been in business for more than 3 generations. The market complex is more than a century old.

The land which was mortgaged by the owners was attached by the debtors, and was recently purchased by a former MP Haroon’s son – Imran Khan, who is planning to evict the vendors.

Silence of the state in the issue would prove beneficial to land owners and not the fisherfolk, said the association members. The petition submitted that thousands of fish vendors and workers rely on the business in Chintadripet, and the lot includes destitute women and elderly women who eke out a living by this trade”, the petition read.

The petitioners wanted the State should mediate talks with the fish vendors and the land owners to ensure that those involved in the trade were allowed to operate in the same complex.

The petition was presented by South Indian Fishermen’s Welfare Association, Tamilnadu Meenavar Munnetra Sangam, Kadalora Makkal Pathukapu Iyakkam, and Tamilnadu Meenavar Murpoku Sangam.
