Student drowns in waterfalls near Kotagiri

The deceased, J Vignesh (20) of Red Hills in Chennai, was a second-year student of Loyola College. Police said that Vingesh along with three of his friends had come to their classmate’s house in Kotagiri on Friday. 

On Saturday afternoon, all five went to bathe in Catherine Falls, about 10 km from Kotagiri. 

As there was not enough water in the falls, they climbed the rocks to bathe in water collected there. While bathing, Vignesh slipped and fell into a deeper area. One of his friends rescued him. They rushed him to the Government Kotagiri Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. 

Police said the body would be handed over to the parents after a post mortem late on Saturday night.

A patrol team from Pallavaram police station, responding quickly to the calls of a call taxi driver, nabbed a youth, who was on the run after stealing the mobile phone of the driver. Anthony Samy (42), a calltaxi driver was sleeping in his car in Pallavaram on Friday after a trip when the youth picked his phone up. Police identified him as B Sreenivasan (22) of Kundrathur and recovered Rs 10,000 worth cell phone from him.
