Police said, one Praveen was running a gold showroom in Sowcarpet. On Tuesday night, his driver Venkatraman, (43), resident of Avadi, was taking 1.5 kg gold and 5 kg silver items from the showroom to Praveen’s house in a Tata Sumo. Praveeen was riding home on his two-wheeler.

Around 11.30 pm, a Tata Indica car intercepted the SUV near Chinmaya Vidyalaya on Taylors Road. Four persons got down from the car and started knocking on the door panels. When Venkatraman rolled down the window, the gang snatched the keys. They then pulled Venkatraman out of the SUV, got inside and drove away.

Venkatraman, who has been working for Praveen for the last 10 years, immediately alerted his employer. Based on a complaint from Venkatraman, the Kilpauk police registered a case and are investigating.
