Armed Reserve head constables in city await due promotion
More than 280 Armed Reserve (AR) police personnel, who had joined service with Chennai city camp during 1984 to 1991, are still awaiting promotion, while their juniors, who joined in as late as 1997 in other districts, have already become sub-inspectors and secured postings in Chennai as their superiors.

Despite having an experience of 30 years, the lackadaisical approach of the DGP’s office has thwarted these head constables their due promotion, said sources. Sources told DTNext that the city police should get permission from the DGP to promote constables and added that many letters written to the DGP so far remain unanswered.
“We feel insulted as we need to salute and report to sub-inspectors who joined much later than us. We are also denied the increments and pay benefits that come with the promotion for such a long time. We had taken it up during the grievance meetings but nothing has moved on the ground so far,” an affected police constable said on request of anonymity.
When contacted, SN Seshasai, Additional Commissioner of Police, Headquarters, said the city police were ready to promote them once they get permission from the DGP office. “The promotions are decided on a range basis. When it comes to Chennai range, the promotions happen much slower compared to other districts. It is true that we have the problem of junior policemen recruited as sub-inspectors and the seniors working as head constables under them,” Seshasai said.
When asked, City Commissioner of Police Karan Singha said he was not aware of the issue and directed the Additional Commissioner of Police, Headquarters, to submit the concerned files to him at the earliest. “I must study before commenting anything official about it. I have sought the files and will see what could be done,” Karan Singha told DTNext.
