Police said Nithyaraj, owner of the three-storied building, lives on the second floor, while his daughter Rajalakshmi and family live on the first floor. The house on Naval Hospital Road, Vepery, was targeted by the burglar, who in all likelihood undertook a surveillance of the house for a while, in order to learn about the routine of the residents.
Police said Nithyaraj had gone out on Friday afternoon after which his daughter Rajalakshmi merely put the latch on the main door and went up to the terrace in order to feed her child. When Nithyaraj returned home, he found the main door of the house open. When he went inside, he found a cupboard ransacked, with things strewn all around. On checking further, he found that 50 sovereigns of jewellery kept inside a locker of the cupboard was missing.Â
When he alerted his daughter, she too confirmed the theft. However, 50 sovereigns of jewels kept in another part of the same cupboard was left untouched. On receiving information about the burglary, Vepery police rushed to the spot and collected evidence from the scene of crime. Police have registered a case and further investigation is on.Â
A few days ago, on March 25, a gang led by a woman claiming to be from Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) entered the house of a woman in Madhavaram, held a knife to her child, and demanded she hand over her jewellery. The gang decamped with 40 sovereigns of gold and two kilograms of silver articles.
