A couple of days after the controversy over the visit of Rajinikanth to Sri Lanka ended, the Superstar was back in the news on Wednesday as reports suggested that Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Sri Najib Tun Razak, who will arrive in the city on Thursday, will be meeting the actor at a well-known hotel on Friday.

Sources said that the meeting, which was confirmed earlier this week, would be arranged by the Malaysian High Commission.

A source close to Rajinikanth told DTNext, “We received an invitation from the Malaysian Prime Minister’s office last week and later confirmed it with the Malaysian High Consulate, Chennai, this week.” The meeting is happening at a city hotel in which Rajini will also be meeting other delegates from Dato Najib’s office. When asked if there was any political agenda behind the big-ticket meeting, a source close to the Prime Minister’s office denied it and said, “This is purely a courtesy meeting and has no political significance.”

A few Malaysian newspapers carried reports saying that the actor was likely be to made the Indian tourism ambassador to Malaysia. Previously, it was Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who was given this honour. “So far, we haven’t taken a decision. If such a development takes place, a communication will definitely come from the Prime Minister’s office.” Rajnikanth acted in Kabali in 2016, a blockbuster, which had large portions of the movie shot in Malaysia and the theme revolved around the workers’ issue in that country.

There were speculations that the Malaysian government might bestow the prestigious title of ‘Dato’ upon Rajinikanth. However, sources within the Malaysian Prime Minister’s office did not confirm the rumours.

Rajinikanth to start new political party?

Amidst speculation that Rajinikanth might float a new political party, the actor’s representatives maintained that he had no intention to foray into politics. However, fans of Rajinikanth, who will meet on April 2 here for a consultative meet, may push the Superstar to join politics. The sudden announcement about the meeting has triggered speculation on whether the actor will be once again persuaded to take the political plunge, a demand which he has been resisting. However, the actor’s representatives released a statement refuting the developments.
