The party candidate Mathivanan, who is DMDK’s North Chennai District secretary, has been meeting the electorate with other functionaries and supporters in a small way. The cadre have even prepared a map for the campaign of Captain (Vijayakanth) in the constituency as they expected him to commence his tour from April 1 onwards. The news of their Captain’s ill-health has upset most of the cadre working in RK Nagar. However, senior party functionaries said that Vijayakanth’s health condition is stable and the chances of him campaigning in RK Nagar are also bright. “Captain is gradually recovering from the illness and he will be discharged soon. We hope that he can remain a star campaigner for the party in the by-poll,” B Parthasarathy, former DMDK MLA and secretary of party headquarters, told DTNext.
Meanwhile, Premalatha Vijayakanth is believed to start canvassing votes for the party nominee soon. “Things are going well and voters are in a mood to support DMDK,” said Nallathambi, party treasurer. He added “If Vijayakanth is unable to come due to illness, Premalatha will be there to woo the voters in his place.”
But this announcement has created disappointment among a section of the DMDK cadres. “All the party leaders have already commenced their high-decibel campaigns in the segment. In such a scenario, Vijayakanth’s absence will add to the difficulty of party candidate in reaching out to the electorate,” said a functionary hesitatingly.
