Last-ditch effort by OPS group, MAD Peravai to fight RK Nagar by-poll jointly

Discreet talks between senior functionaries of the former chief minister O Paneerselvam’s group and the newly-launched MAD Peravai led by late chief minister Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar over fighting the RK Nagar bypoll is being held on two crucial issues, informed sources told DTNext on Wednesday.

Back channel talks were held on who would be the general secretary of the AIADMK in case the OPS faction is granted the ‘Two Leaves’ symbol. But more importantly, the Peravai wanted to fight the polls and insisted the OPS group to support them. It seems that the second issue had peeved the AIADMK functionaries.

“As we are the real AIADMK, it is for the Peravai to join us and not vice versa. But the Peravai’s argument was that the current scenario was similar to the situation in October 1972 when former chief minister MGR ousted from the DMK by his bete noire Karunanidhi resulted in the former starting the ADMK.”

Peravai functionaries felt that the case regarding the Two Leaves symbol might be prolonged and hence it would be wiser for the party to back the Peravai which, if agreed to by AIADMK, was willing to convert into a party.

But with nominations closing on Thursday, there is hardly 24 hours left to arrive at a decision. And whether this time will be enough for both sides to cobble together an alliance remains a question.

    Madhavan’s party

Meanwhile, Deepa’s husband Madhavan told DTNext that he was busy with the formation of his new party and that it was yet to be officially announced. Madhavan had also announced that even if he started a political outfit, it would still support his wife Deepa’s candidature in the RK Nagar bypoll.

Deepa’s husband Madhavan had earlier announced at Jayalalithaa’s memorial that he has planned to start a political outfit soon as he felt alleged that evil forces were not allowing Deepa to take correct decisions on various issues.
