CBI sources said, Franklin Prakash had criminally conspired with a few other officials and individuals and credited the professional tax deducted from the salaries of the Salem division employees to his accounts and to the accounts of his accomplices.

Franklin Prakash, who was in charge of deducting the professional tax, preparing cheques and crediting the deducted amount to the account of Tamil Nadu State Government, conspired and wilfully credited the deducted amount in his bank account and that of his accomplices by fudging the account numbers.

During investigations, the CBI team found out that the accused had wrongfully gained an amount of Rs 26,65,179. He used two of his accounts and the account of JFH Business Point, which was operated by one of his accomplices.

The team registered an FIR under IPC Sections 120 B (Punishment of criminal conspiracy), 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and Sections 13 (2), 13 (1) (d) of Prevention of Corruption Act.

CBI sources said the financial fraud happened during 2015-16, which had caused a substantial loss to the exchequer.

The investigating officers also conducted raids on the residential and office premises of Franklin Prakash and seized incriminating documents pertaining to the case.

CBI Anti-Corruption Branch inspector T Sivaprakasham has been given the charge of investigation and sources told DTNext that the agency was now investigating the possible involvement of senior railway officials.
