According to police, a lorry that was plying towards Guindy from Parry’s Corner lost control and hit the parapet of the Gemini flyover around 6.40 am.Â
An SUV that was closely following the lorry rear ended it. The SUV was then rammed by an MTC bus which was coming from behind.Â
In the impact, the SUV swerved to the left and almost hit the platform grill on the side of the US Consulate. Five occupants of the SUV suffered severe injuries. Lorry driver Ramesh, who sustained minor injuries, jumped out of the vehicle and fled the spot. The Adyar traffic investigation police later arrested him from the Government Royapettah Hospital, where he was taking treatment.Â
Police suspect that the lorry driver could have dropped off to sleep while driving and might have lost control of the vehicle. The passengers inside the SUV were on their way to Tirumullaivoyal from Royapettah to attend a family function, police said.Â
The accident caused huge traffic-jam on Anna Salai and normalcy was restored only after 8 am.
