3 more cops named in graft case
It seems more skeletons are tumbling out of the police force’s closet as the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption (DVAC) trap case which led to the arrest of Puzhal inspector Jayakumar, has three more perpetrators.
Chennai
The police have confirmed the involvement of an assistant commissioner of police and two other constables. Inspector Jayakumar was caught red-handed by the DVAC while accepting a bribe of Rs 1. 5 lakh on March 10.
Speaking to DTNext, a senior DVAC official said, “There are four accused listed in the FIR. The A1 accused is the assistant commissioner, Lingathirumaran and Jayakumar is the A2 accused. The remaining two accused are head constable Sahayarajan and constable Senthilkumar.”
Police sources said that the constables had approached Kannan (the complainant) and said that since he was taking very good care of the inspector (by offering bribe money), he must ‘think’ of them as well. The complainant has claimed to have audio recordings of the same.
“The case was brought to Puzhal’s jurisdiction, instead of Velacherry, under the directions of the assistant commissioner,” a police source said. Inspector Jayakumar was caught taking the money from Kannan, after he had promised to help the complainant go scott free from the case. Kannan informed DVAC DSP Udaya Shankar and subsequently lodged a complaint, following which, a 10-member team conducted an inquiry.
Speaking to DTNext, additional commissioner of police (North) Dr M C Sarangan said, “We are carrying out further investigations into this case. The department will take necessary action and punish the guilty as per the rules.”
Earlier, on January 27 2017, the Kanchipuram DVAC arrested Inspector Ranganathan (47) of District Crime Branch for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000. He had threatened a man from Ponneri who knew a woman who was arrested and remanded in a Rs 40 lakh cheating case.
Ranganathan used to blackmail the man saying he would also be booked in the same case, if he did not pay Rs 20,000 as bribe.
