The Royapettah police have picked up 30 migrant labourers and are interrogating them in a bid to identify the assailants who had attempted to burgle the Punjab National Bank branch at Avvai Shanmugham Salai early on Saturday.

The police team has retrieved the CCTV footages from the bank, which showed two persons trying to open the locker and later torching some documents kept inside the bank. Police sources said, the images of the assailants were not very clear as it was dark. However, they have picked up some suspects and are interrogating them to identify the gang behind the attempt. Police sources said in most of the bank robbery and burglary cases, professional inter-state
gangs are involved. Most of these gangs are from north India and the police wanted to find out if such a gang was behind the burglary bid. Police sources said that they were also probing the possibility of a local gang in the attempt as the burglars did not carry any equipment to break open the metal locker. “Usually they carry gas cutters during bank burglaries. But the duo who broke into the PNB branch were not carrying any such tools,” a senior official said. Police sources said many bank branches and ATMs still do not have security guards, despite it being a mandatory requirement. “They either do not employ a security guard or employ some aged personnel as security guards. Criminals tend to target such branches and ATMs,” the official added.
