Armed Reserve cop killed in fight over woman

In an incident that seems to be taken out of a Kollywood movie, an Armed Reserve (AR) police constable was stabbed to death by another AR constable at the house of one of his female colleagues at Tiruvallur on Saturday.

The deceased was allegedly under the impression that the accused was having an affair with his female colleague, whose husband was in the Indian Army, presently posted in Kashmir. Police said Amrutha Raj (25), a constable attached to the Chennai city Armed Reserve was at the house of his colleague Saranya (23), also a constable attached to the city AR, at Kohinoor Avenue in Tiruvallur on Saturday.

Around 11.45 pm, Soundarapandian (23), a constable attached

to the Tiruvallur Armed reserve came to Saranya’s house. Thinking that Amrutha Raj was having an affair with Saranya, whose husband was an Indian Army officer currently posted in Kashmir, Soundarapandian entered into an argument with Amrutha Raj regarding the latter visiting the woman constable’s house. Amrutha Raj countered Soundarapandian’s arguments and the verbal duel soon turned physical. “Soundarapandian assaulted Amrutha Raj. In a fit of rage, Amrutha Raj pulled out a knife he was carrying and stabbed Soundarapandian. A profusely bleeding Soundarapandian was rushed to a private hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” an official attached to the Tiruvallur police told DTNext .

The Tiruvallur town police later arrested Amrutha Raj and remanded in custody. Police sources said that Saranya would also be made a co-accused in the case and may be arrested on Monday. “Both Saranya and Amrutha Raj would be suspended immediately and will lose their jobs if the charges against them are proved,” the official added. Police have contacted Saranya’s husband in Kashmir and have passed on the information to him. Police said that Saranya had been living with her aged grandfather at Kohinoor Avenue. According to them, both Soundarapandian and Amrutha Raj used to visit her house regularly. However, when Soundarapandian came to know about Amrutha Raj’s visit, he was unhappy and wanted Amrutha Raj to stop visiting her, police said.
