Two Southern Railway trains enter superfast league

People travelling from Chennai to Tiruchy, and Coimbatore to Tuticorin would have to shell out an additional Rs 20 per ticket (second class sleeper) per ticket for the same comfort and almost the same journey time. The value addition for travellers would be between 2kmph and 7kmph. The speed of Rockfort would be increased from 53.3kmph to 56kmph, starting Wednesday, June 8 from when the upgrading would come in to force. 

Rockfort Express would start from Chennai Egmore at 10.30 pm and reach Tiruchy at 4.30 am.It was understood from railway officials that trains exceeding 55kmph would qualify and would be converted in to superfast train. 

Following the near completion of doubling work between Chennai and Tiruchy, the journey time has been reduced consistently and hence the train has been upgraded in tune with the rise in speed, senior SR officer said. 

Following the conversion, Rockfort Express train no: 16177 has been renumbered as 12653 and the train running in the opposite direction has been changed to 16178 from 12654. The average speed of Coimbatore – Nagercoil – Coimbatore Express would increase by 7kmph consequent the conversion to superfast express from train No.16612 to train No.22670 and train No.16611 to train No.22669 from June 28, 2017.
