Sharon Joy is the only Indian student who has been selected for the Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC) that will be held in July, 2017.
Chennai
Sharon, who is a Class 11 student from a top city school, will be a part of a special delegation that will begin from Washington DC and conclude in New York City. The conference will be a unique 10 days’ leadership journey for secondary school students from around the world who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Sharon, the granddaughter of Dr. KM Cherian (Chairman and CEO, Frontier Lifeline Hospital), had scored 90-95 percentile in the PSAT (a standardised test administered by the College Board in the United States) after which she was extended the opportunity to attend the conference. At the global meet, Sharon will interact with subject matter experts, gain hands-on experience, with powerful influence over politics, finance, culture and diplomacy. On receiving this opportunity, Sharon said, “I was fortunate to have been invited for this year’s conference. This conference is not only a unique leadership development programme that brings together outstanding young people from around the world but also builds critical leadership skills in a global context. I am looking forward to be part of this global opportunity.” Her mother Sandhya Cherian added, “The entire family is extremely happy and proud of Sharon. Not only has she scored well in the exam, she’s also going to represent the country on an important platform.”
The programme will have a carefully designed curriculum, which includes thought-provoking simulations that build leadership skills. Since 1985, the Global Young Leaders Conference has helped motivated students to fully explore cultural differences, gain first-hand exposure to the challenges of international diplomacy, build confidence, and enhance decision-making skills in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
