Prof V Chandrasekhar, a resident, who is the President of the Sr Citizens Group of Besant Nagar (SCGOBN) said, “We have approached the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) about this issue for the last two years. These toilets, which have been occupying the pavements, caused an inconvenience to the passengers, who got off here. They must bear the stench and cross puddles of dirty water, leaking from the toilets. Moreover, there is no privacy for the toilet users. The toilet has been wrongly located. During Cyclone Vardah, these toilets were damaged and couldn’t be used. Now, we requested the Corporation to relocate the public toilets to the community hall compound.” Kamakshi Subramaniyan, a civic activist, said the toilets have become a nuisance than a facility.

“Most people don’t know how to use bio-toilets. After the first few days, it is unusable or it is under lock and key. The Corporation should ensure that it is cleaned twice a day. But these toilets are cleaned only once in 3-4 days and is inaccessible. These toilets are not made keeping in mind the public but exist merely as statistics. The Corporation should find out from the public where these toilets are required before providing this facility,” added the 86-year-old resident.

An official from the Corporation pointed out that the bio-toilets were provided near the bus stop on the request of bus drivers and commuters.
