A police inspector attached to the Anna Nagar police station is facing departmental enquiry after he was accused of cheating a businessman promising him to exchange demonetised currency worth Rs. 1 crore.

He later refused to return Rs.36 lakh. The city police higher-ups are trying to cover up the issue and refused to divulge details of the businessman’s complaint.
According to highly placed sources, the inspector and his cousin offered to exchange Rs.1 crore for a businessman and collected the money. Sources said the cousin managed to get Rs. 64 lakh exchanged and gave it to the businessman. However, a dispute arose between the inspector and his cousin over splitting of the commission for the exchange. The inspector promptly refused to part with the remaining Rs.36 lakh in new currency.
Several attempts to get back the money by the businessman did not yield any result and a complaint was lodged with the City Police Commissioner’s grievance cell. A Deputy Commissioner held inquiries with the complainant. Sources said the Joint Commissioner (West) Santhosh Kumar had also summoned the inspector and conducted inquiries. However, senior officials refused to divulge the details of the complaint and are reportedly trying to shield the inspector.
When contacted, Additional Commissioner (Intelligence) P Thamaraikannan said that he had no information about the case and the Additional Commissioner (North), under whose jurisdiction the incident happened could share the details. “There is no such complaint. It is false,” Deputy commissioner of police, Anna Nagar, Feroz Khan Abdullah claimed.
When contacted, Additional Commissioner (North) C Sridhar said there was no complaint but an information regarding such activity had come to his notice. “There is an information against Anna Nagar Law and order inspector. I have asked the Deputy Commissioner, Anna Nagar to conduct an inquiry and submit a report. If he has already come to adverse notice earlier, then he would be put in control room till the inquiry is over,” Sridhar said.
