Whenever the heads of the force wanted more men on the road to take care of law and order duty and VIP security, specialised units like the Central Crime Branch (CCB) are summoned resulting in their work being badly hit. According to highly placed sources, officials attached to such specialised units were being summoned to take care of law and order and VIP bundobust duties regularly.
“CCB is not a law and order force and what they specialise is in specialised crimes, including cyber and white collar crimes. However, our inspectors and other staff are being regularly deputed on the field for bandobast and other law and order duties,” a senior police official told DTNext. As a result, most of the cases registered with the CCB are kept pending investigation.
“Attending the court for ongoing cases itself is a major duty and an assistant commissioner is being regularly deputed at the court to handle such cases. So we have limited officials to investigate the cases, but they too are roped in to law and order duty,” the official added. There are many sensitive and high-profile cases with CCB that are pending.
“Some of our officials believe that VIP bundobust is more important than criminal investigation and delivering justice to affected public, they do not mind deputing us to such jobs. We may have lined up some work as part of our investigation, but will be forced to drop that and stand on the road, guarding the VIPs,” another inspector attached to the city police said.
Chennai city has 137 law and order police stations in its limits and have one inspector and two sub-inspectors, apart from constables to take care of VIP bundobust and law and order duty.
In addition to this they also have the Armed Reserve constables. About 3,000 AR constables have been transferred and posted to Chennai from the TSP battalion recently.
Sources in CCB told DTNext that mostly they try not to register the cases due to the delay in probe and work out a compromise between the affected parties.
