The cop even went as far as criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not lifting the ban. “There are many (policemen) who share the same feelings as the protesters. Due to the fear of being reprimanded by senior officers, they are not opening up,” Mozhiyazhagan, the AR constable who originally hails from Ramanathapuram told the cheering protesters. He was emotionally charged by the massive turnout at the Marina and could not withhold his commitment to the cause.

He appeared to have little regard to the consequences of his actions on his career when he grabbed the mike and spoke out. His speech was met with loud applauses and cheers from the crowd. “In the history of Tamil Nadu, policemen have never participated in any protest. But I am doing it as I believe that we have the right to protect our culture. I am representing those in the police force who share the same feeling,” Mozhiyazhagan said during his high-voltage speech.

Within minutes, a video of his speech started trending on social media. A private firm in Madurai even offered him a job, if he loses his present one, with a monthly salary of Rs 30,000. The police higher ups, who realised the public support for the constable, managed to remove him from the venue. According to senior police officials, he had been marked absent on Friday as he was not available for duty.

Sources said that this would save him from facing charges of dereliction of duty. Another traffic constable, Vijayakumar, who was on half duty also came out in support for the protest. He, however, was not in uniform and not many realised that he too was a cop. The police have thus far not initiated any disciplinary action against the cops.
