The police arrested one of the perpetrators, who is a college student. The gang was planning to sell the vehicle at Tada in Andhra Pradesh. Search is on to nab three others, who are absconding. According to police, Muralikrishnan (53) of Vandalur, a driver attached to Fast Track call taxi service, received a call around 1.45 am on Sunday requesting a trip to Besant Nagar from Kovalam. Muralikrishnan picked up four youth from Kovalam in his Tata Indigo car around 2.30 am and started to Besant Nagar.

When they reached Injambakkam, the gang asked Muralikrishnan to stop the car, saying that they wanted to meet a friend. The driver stopped the vehicle and two of the youth got down. Sometime later, the duo returned and asked Muralikrishnan to resume the journey.

However, the moment, Muralikrishnan put on his seat belt and was about to start the car, two of the three youth sitting in the rear held both his hands from behind while the other started strangulating him using a nylon rope, said police. Muralikrishnan, however, managed to unlock and open the door and put his leg out in a bid to attract attention of other road users. Meanwhile, Kanangi Nagar inspector Ravi, who was patrolling the area along with a sub inspector, saw the car parked with the door open and went near to check it.

On seeing Muralikrishnan struggling for his life, the policemen rushed to his aid. On seeing the policemen, the gang got out of the vehicle and started running away from the spot. The policemen gave chase but could catch only one of the four, the police added. He was identified as Mohammed Irfan (20), a resident of M S Koil Street in Royapuram and a first-year B A (Arabic) student at a private college in Chennai.

He told police that his parents had recently asked him to leave the house because of his criminal behaviour and had been staying with his friend Suhail Ahammed, a cell phone mechanic at Anna Salai.

The duo along with their friends Niroshan and Kalyan had hatched the plan to hijack the cab after murdering the driver and sell the vehicle at Tada in Andhra Pradesh. It was Suhail, who made the call to the taxi service. The police are searching for him, Niroshan and Kalyan, who are absconding. Further investigations are on.
