Maid kidnaps ex-IAS officer’s granddaughter, traced in 24 hours
A retired IAS official’s one-and-half year-old granddaughter was kidnapped by a maid servant on January 4 from his residence at Johny Raman Street, Arumbakkam. After almost 24 hours, police managed to secure the woman, along with the child, from Kilpauk on January 5.

Police have arrested Bula (25), a maid servant hailing from Otteri, who had come for work at the house of the child for the first time on Wednesday. According to the police, the servant maid, who is married but without a child, kidnapped the child as she wanted to it to be her own. Sreenivasan (35), son of retired IAS officer Muthusamy and father of the child lodged a complaint with the Arumbakkam police station and police launched a hunt for the baby. Since the family did not receive any calls for ransom, police suspected the involvement of the maid servant and launched a hunt for her.
Police said Bula escaped with the child on Wednesday morning and went straight to Nellore to her father-in-law’s house. “Her in-laws panicked and asked her to return the child. They forced her to leave their premises,” a police official who investigated the case told DTNext.
Bula returned to Chennai from Nellore, boarded a bus to Tindivanam and returned to Chennai later in the night. She was too scared to return the baby to her parents.
“She was roaming around in Kilpauk area with the child when we picked her up on Thursday. The woman seemed to have no other intention but to nurture the child as her own,” the police official said. Police later arrested the accused and remanded her in judicial custody. The baby was returned to her parents. “The baby is fine and she was well taken care of. We do not see any other motive behind the kidnap,” the official added.
