Tight security for AIADMK general council meet on December 29
In view of the violence at the AIADMK party headquarters against the rebel MP Sasikala Pushpa’s husband Lingeswara Thilagan and her lawyer, police have made elaborate security arrangements at the venue of the AIADMK general council meeting scheduled to be held at Vanagaram.

The meeting which is expected to announce the party’s new general secretary, is expecting some drama as reports regarding a rift between party workers, who support and oppose Sasikala’s elevation as party general secretary is doing rounds. The MP’s husband and lawyers were attacked by AIADMK cadre at the party headquarters as they went to put in her nomination for the post of party general secretary.
Police had been tight-lipped regarding the number of policemen deployed at the general council meeting. Chief Minister O Paneerselvam visited the meeting venue to check the arrangements. According to a local police official, the security to the general council meeting has been scaled down considerably this year.
“We cannot compare the security provided to the AIADMK general council meeting during the period of Jayalalithaa with this year’s meeting. It has been completely scaled down and we do not expect any law and order issues at the meeting,” a local police official who was overseeing the arrangements told DTNext.
However, three assistant commissioners from the Ambattur district are camping at the meeting venue to monitor the arrangements. Police expect that there can be a large turnout of public outside the venue, who are eager to know the fallout of the meeting. Intelligence report also did not flag any possibility for violence or discord among party workers during the meeting.
“We don’t think there could be any violence at the council meeting and if at all they are going to elect the general secretary then it would be a unanimous choice,” a police official added. Meanwhile Sasikala Pushpa said her husband had been attacked by the vested interests who opposed her elevation as party general secretary. Senior party leaders have already expressed their opinion that Sasikala would be elected general secretary unopposed.
