According to the police, the youth identified as Murugan alias Balamurugan (23), a native of Pilliarnatham, Thoothukudi, approached Pushpakala, residing at CPWD Quarters, K K Nagar and asked her for a glass of water. When Pushpakala went inside the house to fetch water, the youth followed her and snatched her five-sovereign gold chain. Before she could alert the neighbours, the snatcher ran away from the spot.

Pushpakala’s husband Satyanarayanan had gone out for work. She then lodged a complaint with the K K Nagar police and a special team took up the investigation. The team checked CCTV cameras in the locality and collected the image of the suspect. The police team later found him roaming in K K Nagar area and arrested him. They also recovered Pushpakala’s gold chain. Police said Murugan had been working with a scrap dealer at Jafferkhanpet about two years ago. He had left the job then and re-joined the same shop a few days ago. While trying to purchase waste paper, he realised that Pushpakala was alone and targeted her.
