Suraaj apologises to Tamannaah, all heroines for his comments

In a recent video interview, the director of the recently released Kaththi Sandai, Suraaj said that heroines get paid in crores, so they are supposed to expose in front of the audience. He also went on to say that there are movies where there is a scope for performance-oriented roles, but in commercial movies, heroines are paid to look glamorous. 

Suraaj also explained that once a costume designer in his movie came with a long robe for the heroine for a particular scene, ‘I called him and asked him to cut the size of the costume till it looked glamourous.’ This comment, which projects the tinseltown actresses in poor light, has definitely miffed them. 

In a statement, the heroine of Kaththi Sandai, Tamannaah said, “I am very hurt and angered by the comments made by my director Suraaj I would definitely want him to apologise not only to me but to the entire women in the industry. We are actors and we are here to act and entertain audiences and should not at any point be objectified as commodities. I have worn costumes which I’m comfortable with. It is sad that women in our country are spoken about so frivolously and I would like to tell my audiences that our industry should not be generalised due to comments made by one individual.” 

Later, Suraaj issued a statement apologising to Tamannaah and other heroines. He said, “I would like to apologise to Tamannaah and other heroines in the industry. My intention was not to show anyone in bad light and take back my comments.” 

Earlier, Nayanthara lashed out saying that actresses are not strippers and asked how can a responsible person from the industry can make such crass comments.  And by making such comments that heroines take money to shed clothes, he is misleading youngsters who will think this is what happens in the film industry.

What he said is offensive and not true at all. We get paid for our talent and acting skills which determines your longevity in the industry. Exposing or looking glamourous won’t help anyone in the long run. It is unfortunate that the director still belongs to such an old school of thought. Cinema has changed and audience come to theatres to watch our performances. Personally, even if it is a commercial movie, I would still not go out of my way to expose.

I can’t even think of accepting a movie which will expose my body just for the heck of it. We all have our families, who we value dearly and do not want them to feel disappointed at what we are doing. At the end of the day, aren’t we answerable to them? Moreover, I have made it a point to be a part of movies which will attract family audiences to the theatres.
