All-women officer crew for marine patrol
In a ‘first of its kind’ initiative on the Eastern coast of India, the Coast Guard Eastern Region has deployed an all-women officer crew for undertaking maritime patrolling on the sea in a fixed wing Dornier aircraft and to check illegal activities at seas, especially near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

A defence statement here on Friday said Deputy Commandants Akshi and Sunita (pilots) and Observer Priyanka Tyagi from 744 Squadron Coast Guard Air Station here have successfully completed maritime reconnaissance Dornier sortie over high seas. “All lady officers have been continuously trained for real time operations which include pollution response, maritime reconnaissance, search and rescue and anti-poaching missions,” it said. Deputy Commandant Akshi joined the ICG Air Station at Chennai in June 2014 and has 1,700 hours of flying experience, while Priyanka who joined in February 2014 has 1,500 hours flying experience. Deputy Commandant Sunita joined this premier squadron in August 2011 and has 1,200 hours of experience.
